Temple Tales: The Art of Miniature Masterpieces

Building a temple is a very complex task for sure. Right from choosing design, procuring material and overlooking the construction; every step requires a lot of planning and careful watching. But that doesn’t stop us from building more and more temples. Does it?

As per Hinduism, a temple is where devotion is. It does not have to be a grand structure to house the deity. If you just fold your hands with devotion, a temple will be created within your mind and heart. And following this principle, many artists explore various art form and express their devotion in the process.

Meet Eshwar from Paderu, Andhra Pradesh. He expresses his devotion by creating miniature temples. Eshwar graduated in B.Tech Civilengineering in the year 2020. After graduation, he did a job for 2.5 years, but then he left the job to pursue the interest in art. Eshwar has always been very passionate about art. During his growing year, he has always been working on micro art on pencils and other kind of miniature stuff on different materials. Later, he took up construction of miniature temples. Along with the fascination towards temple, the complexity and challenge involved in building the miniature temples and sculpting the deities is also what motivates him for building the miniature temples.

The process to create miniature models starts with clicking photographs and videos of the temple to be modelled; from all angles. Then, a 3D model of the temple is created, with placements of all elements at appropriate scale and places. These elements would include the Vigraha, pillars, Mandapas, doors, grills and interior. Based on this 3D model, the construction of the whole temple takes place. For the construction, he uses miniature iron bars and bricks. Procuring these miniature bricks and iron bars is not easy task. In the initial phases, he did face difficulty in procuring them. But with time, Eshwar has managed to build resource centers for the all the material he requires for the temple models.

The time required to build temple models varies largely, based on the complexity of temple complex and number of elements involved. We look forward to seeing many beautiful temples being made by Eshwar in future.
